'Plus One' Place Card Etiquette

Question: If you're not sure the name of the 'plus one' how do you handle that place card?

This is a VERY good place card etiquette question and a common one. There are a few ways that ‘plus one’ place cards can be addressed. First you want to start by asking yourself:

Will the place cards be displayed at an entrance table?

So, your place cards are located at an entrance table this actually makes things very easy. First option would be to create a card for both. Example: Jamie Smith and Guest Table 4

They would then know which table to proceed to as a couple.

Will the place card be located at the individuals seat?

If so, then one place card would be created for Jamie Smith

and a second, separate place card for Jamie’s ‘plus one’ which could read either; Guest of Jamie Smith (or) Jamie Smith’s Guest  where the card would be placed in front of the individuals seats.

An alternative to simply listing your invited guest's, guest as “a guest” (confusing huh?) You can always call or email and ask your family member or friend what their guests name is. Some couples want to be very intimate and personal wedding and feel that it is improper to just call them a “guest” so they take the extra step to find out the name of the ‘plus one’.
